Four long-time residents of an apartment building receive bundles of hell joss paper labeled “Money of the Dead”; two cash them in for dead people who were important in their lives, one sells his share online, one refuses to use it, and all regret their decisions.
Though a bit more “Monkey’s Paw” than a typical Shirley Jackson tale, this is a delightfully dark little story – there is apparently no good way to dispose of these mysterious bundles of “hell money,” and no one comes to a happy end.
