A year after poisoning her family, a woman finds that a wall covered with mold and a suspicious repairman stand between her and an escape to Paris.
Another from “When Things Get Dark,” and another really solid and disturbing story. This is very much in the Shirley Jackson mold, and has some echoes of Highsmith as well (I think of Jackson and Highsmith as kindred, and dark, spirits). The final scene is haunting, and reminiscent of the horrific spaghetti dinner in Paul Tremblay’s “Head Full of Ghosts.”
