A woman (possibly Eve?) liberates animals, and herself, from their common names, and walks off into a world of poetry and specificity.
This story has the feel of a fable or parable, with lightly sketched details and characterization and an interesting question at its core – would we interact differently with the world if we did away with categories like “dog,” “tree,” and “woman” and were forced to deal with the strange and messy reality before us?
I read this because when doing some research into the last story, The Giaconda of the Twilight Noon, I ran across a Weird Studies podcast about both of these stories. Well worth a listen, with some interesting insights into how these stories play off each other.
