A girl who has been raised as a strict vegetarian joins her sister at a prestigious veterinary school, where the first week of hazing involves having blood thrown on her and being made to eat a raw rabbit kidney. That kidney awakens a primal craving for meat, and she moves quickly from chicken to hamburger to shawarma to much more taboo delicacies.
This movie is brutal, gory, and wonderful. Justine’s descent into madness, aided by her sister Alexia, is mesmerizing and wrenching. There are scenes of great beauty and warmth, and scenes of utter depravity, and the emotional whiplash is disorienting. The idea behind it is relatively simple, and could easily have been played for laughs, but it’s taken with utmost seriousness and devastating honesty.
