A mysterious alien, in the shape of Scarlett Johansson, prowls the streets of Glasgow, luring men into her white van where she turns them to goo.
This was a strange, stylish, and unsettling movie. It’s cold and distant and somewhat clinical, with no explanations or exposition or really much of a plot at all. We never learn what this creature really is, or why there’s a motorcyclist following it around and cleaning up the mess it leaves in its wake. Its final encounter in the woods is disturbing, partly because we’re not sure where to put our sympathy: the man in the yellow rain slicker is a monster, but so is the monster in the shape of the pretty woman.
I liked it, I think, but I really can’t be sure. Was it a horror movie? Maybe: it’s certainly got some horrific imagery. Science fiction? Maybe, though there’s precious little “science.” Worth watching? I’d say yes. I think.
